Drive Day 2017 Recap

  • October 13, 2017

On Friday, October 13, 2017, 12 Lifetime Members of the Wellborn Musclecar Museum gathered on a beautiful sunny day in Alexander City, Alabama for Drive Day.  The day started off on a high note as Tim Wellborn started up his 1971 RT Shaker Challenger for the first time in approximately 24 years. It had a recent carburetor rebuild and sounded just like it came off the showroom floor. “It’s always great when Tim demonstrates one of his pride and joy and shares the stories with us because you can see the enthusiasm for these cars shine through!” exclaimed Lifetime Member, Eric Perrine.

From 10 am until 3 pm, Lifetime members took turns driving some of the most sought-after muscle cars from the museum. While most drivers took a special shine to the Rallye Red 1970 Plymouth AAR 340 Six-Pack, members Eric Perrine and Buddy Birdwell most enjoyed the Plum Crazy Purple 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner 440 Six-Pack. Per Mr. Perrine, “The car launches like a rocket with the 440-6 pack, but it was also a modified motor with a nice cam set up coupled with perfectly tuned carburetors. This paired up with a 727 Automatic with an aggressive shift kit…well, it gives you the feeling that you’re in a street race car. The car did not have any interior or exterior rattles or noises. It was like driving a new car.”

It was noted repeatedly during the event how special it was to get an opportunity drive these cars. Most people will never actually drive vehicles such as a Yellow 1973 Dodge Charger, a Red 1972 Dodge Charger Rallye 440 Four Barrel, a Red 1970 Hemi Cuda 4-speed or the two aforementioned cars. One attendee stated that he most enjoyed driving the Hemi Cuda because not too many people can claim to have driven one.

Photos of both Drive Day and the car show that followed are now viewable on the Wellborn Musclecar Museum Facebook page. “When the day ended it reminded me of the feeling of when I was a child when I went to the fair for the first time and did not want my day to end! Thanks to Tim Wellborn for helping a bunch of old men feel like kids again!” said Mr. Perrine with great pride.
